Resolving NetWorker duplicate volume names

I've seen on a few occasions when labelling existing and/or new media via the command line or using the GUI, the labelling will fail with the error "'duplicate volume name".

The cause could be that the media database has associated the barcode label to a volid that's different than the one currently being labelled; It could also be caused by an out-of-sync media database, or having the barcode label manually moved onto another tape volume.

To resolve this issue run the following steps:

  1. Ensure that there are no backups/recoveries currently occurring
  2. Delete the tape volume label from the media database using:
    nsrmm -d volume_name
  3. Repeat step 2 for all tape volumes receiving labeling error
  4. Run nsrim -X
  5. Relable desired tape volume(s)

NOTE: Once relabeled, the data on the tape volume will no longer be available -- Ensure that the data on the volume to be relabeled is no longer needed.
