A5x00 (photon) Cheat Sheet
This article provides a quick guide to the supported disk configuration of Sun StorEdge™ A5000, A5100 and A5200 storage arrays.
The A5000 and A5100 are 14 disk arrays (7 disks in the front and back). The A5200 has a larger capacity of 22 disks (11 front and back). Both arrays have 4 fibre channel connections to it.

Patch Matrix for A5x00
see sunsolve early notifier 14838
Check A5x00 status
# luxadm probe sunhost# luxadm probe Found SENA Name:photon Node WWN:5080020000000598 Logical Path:/dev/es/ses0 Logical Path:/dev/es/ses1
Note the SENA Name name entry for the enclosure name
# luxadm display <enclosure-name>
Using the above probe output, we see an example:
# luxadm display photon (luxadm version: 1.36 98/03/10) SENA DISK STATUS SLOT FRONT DISKS (Node WWN) REAR DISKS (Node WWN) 0 On(O.K.) 200000203722c7be On(O.K.) 200000203722d2e5 1 Not Installed Not Installed 2 Not Installed Not Installed 3 Not Installed On (O.K.) 200000203722ce33 4 Not Installed Not Installed 5 On (O.K.) 200000203722c7be Not Installed 6 Not Installed On (O.K.) 200000203722cd73 7 Not Installed Not Installed 8 Not Installed Not Installed 9 Not Installed Not Installed 10 On (O.K.) 200000203722cfaa On (O.K.) 200000203722cce7
Check A5x00 disk status
- running
format
to check all disks are seen - running
luxadm display [ <name>,<position> | <WWN> ]
where- <name> is the enclosure name gotten from the probe
- <position> is the position of the disk in the array. f=front r=rear, and the slot #. ie:
luxadm display photon,f10
for photon's front slot 10 disk. - <WWN> is the World Wide Name of the disk. This can be gotten from the device path: ~/ssd@Wxxxxxxxxxx,0 (the x's represent the string to be inputed in the command) ie:
luxadm display 20000020370d7d00
You may use this to find the disk firmware and path status to the drives.
Minimum Disk Configuration
# slots | comments |
---|---|
14 | In the minimum disk drive configuration for the 14-slot disk array, disk drives are shipped in rear backplane slots 0, 3, and 6 as well as front backplane slots 3 and 6. |
22 | In the minimum disk drive configuration for the 22-slot disk array, disk drives are shipped in rear backplane slots 0, 3, 6, and 10 as well as front backplane slot 0, 5, and 10. |
Low-level troubleshooting
Q? Can format
or luxadm display
see the array and all disks?
- If not can
probe-scsi-all
from OK prompt (see sunsolve srdb 13189), else contact Sun hardware support
- If so then boot from a OS cd (OK>
boot cdrom -sw
) and check with format. if not, contact Sun hardware support - If so, then the device paths were wrong. (see sunsolve infodoc 15010) to rebuild the device path from the cdrom to original OS.
Info Gathering
If you need to log a call with Sun hardware support, collecting the following information will aide the support engineer:
- Solaris
luxadm probe luxadm display <enclosure> luxadm display <on drive_WWN> /var/adm/messages ls -l /dev/dsk/*s2
- Solstice DiskSuite (SDS) (if involved)
metastat metastat -p metadb
- Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) (if involved)
vxprint -ht vxdisk list vxdmpadm listctrl all
