NetWorker 9.0 Server supported platforms

With the release of EMC NetWorker 9.0, the NetWorker server and NetWorker Management Console will now run only on Linux 64-bit and Windows 64-bit systems. The original NetWorker server platforms such as Solaris, HP-UX and AIX are no longer supported as platforms for either the NetWorker server or NMC server processes,

EMC NetWorker client support for these legacy platforms is still supported, ad the platforms also still supported as storage nodes -- that's what it looks like from the NetWorker 9.0 documentation.

Platform Migration

With the drop of key operating systems like Solaris, HP-UX and AIX as supported NetWorker server platforms, you are left with the following options:

  • Remain with your current NetWorker 8.x release, or
  • Perform a cross platform migration to either Linux or Windows.

From a migration perspective EMC has supported cross platform migration, whereby the NetWorker server (media database, configuration and indexes) are moved from say, Solaris to Linux, AIX to Windows, Windows to Linux, HP-UX to Windows, etc.

If you are one of those sites still using the NetWorker server services on Solaris, HPUX or AIX, you can engage EMC's cross platform migration service and transfer your NetWorker servers across to Linux or Windows.

I've worked with a number of clients performing cross platform migration without any issues theses days, and personally, I would adopt the following approach if you are thinking of going solo with this project:

  • Perform a platform migration of your NetWorker server to Windows or Linux using your current NetWorker version,
  • Upgrade to the new NetWorker 9.0 version

With that in mind if you are having issues you have your legacy system to fallback on as long as the retention periods for your data has not expired :-)
